Geocoinfest Part 2

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

So after I arrive at the hotel, I go to get check-in. This is when I learned I was on the 12th floor. I asked the guy working the front desk how many floors there were at which time he told me; “12″. Knowing I drove down with a truck full of boxes and GCF gear, I was not happy. I had contemplated asking for a lower floor but decided I would just suck it up.  He gave me my hotel key card and told me my room. I headed to the elevator with my personal bags and got inside.

There was a bell boy standing at the elevator when I was getting ready to get in and he let me have the evelvator first as he had a huge load he was moving for someone else. I got in and pushed #12. The elevator didn’t move, I pushed #12 again a couple times and nothing. The elevator doors opened and I smiled at the bell hop. The door shut again and I pushed button 12 again and it didn’t light up (again). I honestly thought the elevator was broke and was a bit worried I might get trapped inside. The elevator doors opened again and the same bell hop was there waiting for an open elevator. I smiled again and said I think the elevator is broke, room 12 won’t light up when I push it. He smiled and told me that I needed to use the key card to get to my room. He took the key, stuck it in the slot and pushed the 12 button and off I went :)

I got to the 12th floor and started looking for my room. I had #1204 and wouldn’t you know it, mine was the very last room. YOu have got to be kidding me, I”m never going to make the Meet and Greet before I get my stuff to the room. I elected to just go back down the to event and worry about unloading the truck later. So off to the meet and greet I went. I got down there and it was pretty well attended. I saw people I knew and met lots of people I had only seen on the Groundspeak forums. I got a chance to sit down and chat woith a couple people and that was nice.

I was also fortunate enough to get some help from some special cachers (about 9 of them) who helped me lug all my junk up to my room! Thanks so much my little helpers!

I also got a chance to set up my banner display a bit early. I built mine and Yime’s banner stands so we could hang our banners. Pabloturtle made it his priority to oversee my setup skills and give me a hard time. Redwing Dave and Yime helped me haul the wood stands in and it gave me a change to see these two in action. I can say they were feeling good, haha. Yime makes a great human parking lot arm.  It’s one of those “you had to be there” moments.  I got a good laugh out of it all.

Some of the things I liked about the Meet and Greet: The set up was nicely done and it was organized. Plenty of room for cachers to mingle and we didn’t have to worry about other groups being around. I wish I would have taken pictures but I honestly was just busy enjoying myself. I thought the setup of the actual event room was pretty decent and easy to navigate.

There was only 1 thing about Friday night that I wasn’t impressed with and that was learning that a couple of vendors/people were selling their coins openly. 2 of them did not vend at the event. I thought that was disrespectful to those of us who paid the full $200 to be a vendor. I know a few other vendors were not happy about this but no one ever wants to rock the boat by saying anything. This is not allowed and according to the rules for the event, they are suppose to be asked to leave.  It was “overlooked” by the event staff because again no one wanted to cause problems. I could talk a bit more about this but what’s done is done and I’m sure I’ll receive a couple nast emails for even opening my mouth about this on my blog. However, I am just calling it like I see it and if you’re going to engage or allow certain behaviors than I suppose you should be open to accepting the heat that comes along with it.

Ok, I’ll sign off for now and post again later.

I hope you all had a nice weekend.

Geocoinfest Part 1

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

So, Geocoinfest in Salt Lake City, Utah was this past October 10th. I’ve never vendored before and was previously at the Pittsburgh event the year before just to see what it was like.

What a very interesting experience. If any of you have read the Groundspeak forums, you’ve pretty much got a good idea of my experience from beginning to end. I suppose this will just be a bit more detailed and some thoughts that I didn’t feel necessary to post on the forums.

Winter struck early in Montana, a blizzard the night before I left and icy, snowpacked roads my entire ride through my beloved state. I pretty much used 4WD the entire ride until I got to Idaho where I saw green grass and leaves still on trees. How unfair is that? I did manage to time part of my drive just perfectly as I was headed over and down Boulder pass which was a sheet of ice, I was right behind a snow plow and he was also laying gravel down. It’s just sad when that’s the highlight of your drive, haha.

Idaho was easy driving and so was Utah for the most part. I didn’t do any caching on my way down because I knew I was going to be arriving just at the Meet and Greet was starting. Before I left, Georgia (the head cheese for the event) sent me directions on what exits to take as I was headed southbound on I-15. In my rush to leave the house, I couldn’t find my atlas and I didn’t bother downloading any coords. to the event. I figured how hard can a hotel right off of I-15 be to find?

First mistake, never mistake yourself as having a photographic memory if you really don’t have one. Second, probably best to load the coords. just in case. Once I started getting close to SLC which was probably about 30 miles north, the traffic started getting heavy. In Montana, we have a 4 lane Interstate, 2 lanes each way. There’s never a problem with hoards of traffic. The Interstate turned into 6 lanes going southbound only and there were alot of cars going the same direction. I looked at my clock and I was hitting Friday rush hour traffic. Oh great! The closer I got to SLC, it became bumper to bumper and stop, go, stop, go. They also had road construction and I started getting confused as to what lane I should be in just in case the exit I was looking for should suddenly appear.

After an hour of fighting traffic, I made it to SLC in jammed packed lanes. I knew my exit had to be coming up, I could see all these really tall building off to my left and I remember thinking; “I wonder if it’s in the middle of the city?” and getting kinda freaked out. BUT, I had Georgia’s good directions, so I knew I’d be ok.

Let’s see, an hour and a half later and no such exit and I started to get the feeling something was wrong. Not having a map, I had no clue if I was no longer in SLC or in the next big city as it all seemed to be packed with homes and businesses. Here in Montana, we don’t really have close towns. YOu know exactly when you have left a town because there just isn’t anything around. I keep driving until I see American Fork and some other names I recognize to be in Utah but knowing they aren’t close to SLC. I decide to stop and try and find out where I am exactly, haha.

I had calle The Mopp Along to try and get better directions but he was pretty much worthless in that department. He said he followed his GPS coords., well I wasn’t smart enough to do that now, was I?

As I’m exiting the Interstate to try and have someone tell me where I am, I get a phone call. It’s bluemotmot who is going to help me vendor. I’m so riled up and upset by now, she thought she’d dialed the wrong person. I know I was totally rambling and was probably incoherent, lol. What I do remember from that conversation was asking here to text me the telephone number to the hotel so I could call and get new directions. Oh no, I didn’t bother printing the hotel information either. Why would I need to call them? They knew I was coming. I received her text about 5 minutes later and I called the hotel.

The gentleman I spoke with was very polite and kindly stated that the directions I was given were for people headed northbound on the Interstate and there is no such exit from my direction and I would have had trouble finding it without the proper directions. Well on one hand I felt better and on the other, I was still mad. I headed northbound this time and it took me about a half hour to get back to SLC. The traffic was a little less congested since I managed to hit it all when I was passing through the first time. I think it took me almost 2 hours to get from one end of SLC to the other. A little tricia there for ya.

Now, I knew when I found the hotel that I could take a authorized u-turn to get to the parking garage. Well, as I am passing the hotel, I can’t find that “authorized” u-turn. Now I’m mad again. I can see the parking garage but I have no clue how to get to it. As I’m making  way around the back side of the hotel, I see Marky and rivercity walking down the side walk. I roll down my window and yell. I asked how to get to the parking garage and they yell, it’s on the other side. WEll ya, I already know that but I didn’t have time to converse while driving down a one-way. I yelled back; “I hate this city” and rolled up my window while I saw them both laughing.

I managed to make it back to the street that goes by the front of the hotel and at this point, was like screw-it. I’m turning here and I don’t care. I swung a u-turn (probably in the wrong spot) and made my way to the parking garage.

I made it! The relief was overwhelming and I was 2 hours late to the event. But better late than never huh?

Part 2 coming up later :)

Just an update

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

Wow, I haven’t posted here for awhile. I actually tried last week but it wouldn’t take my pictures for some reason.

I have been so busy getting ready for Geocoinfest, I come home from work and try to get a little bit done each night plus household stuff.

The webstore cart issue is still being addressed. I’m at my wits end with that. Come to find out the last 2 sales that were announced, products oversold because the webstore was being tweaked while the sale was running. Everyone thought things couldn’t get worse but on my end, it has when it comes to the store. I’m tired of the whole mess. When GCF is over, there will be 1 last sale in an attempt to see if the programmers can nail down the last issues. I’ve been told it’s only minor stuff now (what is minor?). If that sale does not work, I’ve let the company know that I’m done with this working on issues. I think 5 months of stress is enough, in the end, I’m the one who has had to deal with all of it and the ramifications of things not working.

What does this mean? I’m not sure. I decided I’m not going to worry about it anymore. I will worry about it the day of the sale after i get home from GCF. I’ll see what happens and make a decision based on results. I can only say that what was once something I was very proud of and so excited to offer my customers ( a pleasant shoppping experience) has turned into a lengthy mini-nightmare on my end. Most people have been very patient which I appreciate but some people have let me know that their patience has ended.

So there you have a webstore update although there wasn’t much to say in the way of here’s what’s going on. It would appear it’s just a decision on my end to call it quits with “fixes” and get back to a point where this is fun again :)

EARTH TURTLE OCEANIA/CACHE HOPPER SALE DATE/TIME

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

Good Evening all.  I am just doing a copy and paste of the email/newsletter I sent out. I just wanted to get the information posted on the blog.

Hello Everyone!

I will keep this email short. The 2nd minting of the Earth Turtle Oceania coins; Bora Bora, Fiji Islands, Maui and Australia will be available for sale on September 1st (tuesday) at 4:30 pm Montana time (MST) which is also the same as Denver, Colorado. There is a tsun version and additional Tahiti coins but those will be coming with me to GCF. The tsun version will not be for sale at GCF, only for trade.

The Cache Hoppers will also be available for sale; Golden Poison Dart, Blue Poison Dart and the Albino. These were supposed to go up for sale last time but due to web site issues, I could not list them in time.

The webstore has some new programming and we are hoping that this is the final fix. The programmers made some adjustments to the real-time cart system and we’re hoping that this will allow the webstore to stay available. This is our last effort to fix this cart system. If the store crashes, I will be changing shopping carts or looking into a different option on how sales will work.

If the site crashes during this sale and is not up and running with a half hour of crashing. Please consider the sale closed. I will then list the coins unannounced - meaning after the website is back up and running, I will put the coins up for sale at a different date and time only known to me. I will then send out emails to everyone letting you know the coins are up for sale. This will allow the coins to be sold and it will not overload the system. After 24 hours, if there are still coins available, I will announce the sale on the Groundspeak Forums.

Time conversions:
Eastern: 6:30 pm US, Central 5:30 pm US, Pacific 3:30 pm US
World Conversions:  Austrailia, Tasmania September 2rd, 8:30 am * Lisbon, Portugal September 1st, 11:30 pm * London, England September 1st, 11:30 pm * Zurich, Switzerland September 2nd, 12:30 am.

If you have any questions, please send me an email by some time tomorrow. I work during the day and on the day of the sale, I will not be able to answer your questions after I come home. This information will also be posted on my blog and on the Groundspeak Forums.
Thanks! tsun :)

Cache Hopper Sale Date and Time

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

Hey everyone! The second minting of Cache Hoppers has arrived and these have the gritty texture underneath unlike the first round.

We have the Golden Poison Dart Cache Hopper, The Blue Poison Dart Cache Hopper, The Albino and the Mythical Nutella Cache Hoppers. The Poison Dart and Albino versions were named after actual species. I did alittle write up on the Groundspeak forums about each of the frogs, make sure you go read about them if you haven’t already.

This will be either the last sale with the Magento shopping cart or the 1st of many that will work properly. We had a telephone conference a week or so ago and discussed what we thought could be a potential fix to having a real-time cart. I won’t get into all the specifics but we have a prgrammer who is suppose to working on a new code for the Magento cart and hopefully this takes care of the “crashing” issues. If not than I will have to go to a whole new shopping cart system that will be much like what everyone else is using and it will have it’s own issues but site crashing won’t be one of them.

The sale date/time: August 20th, 4:30 pm Montana time (Mountain Standard Time) US.

Eastern: 6:30 pm US, Central 5:30 pm US, Pacific 3:30 pm US

World Conversions:  Austrailia, Tasmania August 21, 8:30 am * Lisbon, Portugal August 20th, 11:30 pm * London, England August 20th, 11:30 pm * Zurich, Switzerland August 21, 12:30 am.

If you have any questions, please email me at tsunrisebey@gmail.com and Cache Hoppers if they are a sell out will be reminted.

CHECKING IN!

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

Hey all,

I know it’s been a bit since I last wrote here. Life has been pretty busy lately and I wish I could say it was all caching related but it’s not.

My attempt at caching last weekend ended in a DNF more so because there were so many muggles and I can’t stand trying to be sneaky in a campground :) Too many tents within 25 feet and lots of people walking around. Oh well saved for another day I guess. However the dogs and I did enjoy ourselves!

Real life work has been very busy and then I come home to work on coin stuff and getting ready for Geocoinfest. 2 months may seem like a far off time frame but when it comes to coins, it’s nice to have an extra week or so of a buffer since it takes about 2 months to get a coin done if all goes smoothly.  I must have 6 or 7 coins right now, all in different stages with the mint and then working trying to get my booth stuff ordered/designed and help arranged seems to be taking up all my time. It got so bad lately that I actually contemplated quitting caching and coins and I’m serious about that. I’m used to only working on 1 design at a time that this has become a real chore and sapping all my free time. But in the end, I’ll probably be happy I did it and thank goodness I won’t have to do it again for awhile!

Cache Hoppers and the Anasazi should be arriving in the next couple of weeks (Anasazi GCF versions). Neptunes Compass and ET Oceania remint versions are on order and I expect them to be in late August. The Hoo Doo coin which has not been seen by anyone is close to being approved but I will say this; 1 version is almost entirely GLOW! I’ve never used glow enamels before but this one is going to look so cool in the dark.  This coins was done exclusively for GCF also and the Glow version will be an exclusive there so if you’re not going, I’d find someone to buy a version for you!

The Baby ET will have an order put in by weeks end and will be offered at a reasonable price to encourage releases ;) and the Armadillo has been sent in (a bit behind schedule) so I’m hoping that will be done in time for GCF. I don’t know if Pax will be done in time or not but I”m leaning toward not because I just haven’t had enough time to correct the mint artwork and I don’t want him done in anythng less than 100%. Libelula is riding the fence, I have the artwork done but I’m not sure if I’ll mint that one for GCF or not. This stuff isn’t cheap especially after adding tracking numbers so we’ll see.

Hopefully this weekend I can get out andplay a little bit but my truck has been under the weather and once I get her fixed, I should be able to get back in the mountains!

I shall be back this weekend with another post! Thanks for reading and have a great week all.

WEBSTORE/WEBSITE ISSUES

Monday, July 20th, 2009

As promised here is a sum up of what’s going on with the webstore. As most of you know, the store seems to crash everytime there is a sale. This last time was no exception and it wasn’t even a full blown sale.  However I did speak with the owner of the compnay who built and hosts my website and we discussed the issues at hand, so here is what he had to say about the whole thing.

First, even though some of you haven’t got to experience it yet, the cart system is in “real time” and once a product is loaded, no one can take it from your cart, so you technically don’t have to rush to check out. I know this is a new concept for people and most everyone tries to get in and get out as fast as possible for fear of losing what’s in their cart. The only time you lose your cart contents is when the site crashes as some of you found out.

This is the only cart system out there that has this feature. Magento is the “sweetest” cart system out there and in theory when everything goes as planned, it’s a wonderful system. However here is where the problem comes in and no one knew that this would happen until it did. The cart system I use is in real time, it does not use “static pages” for the webstore. A static page is what you see on other cart systems and websites. I have static page in use on my site such as the home page, FAQ, Gallery, etc. These pages can not be altered, nothing  about them is interactive.  My webstore is in real time and the pages are not static. One of the ways you can tell this is by going to the store and ordering the test product. You are able to see the amount of product available in the store but when you add a product to your cart, the number changes immediately which indicates everything is happening in “real time.”

If I were using zencart for instance, what you as the customer see is a static page and maybe the number of products available. Every time you add a product to your cart and go to check out, that product amount shown doesn’t change until you actually check out of paypal at which time maybe 25 other people have checked out also. So the amount of product shown is never accurate because it’s not in “real time”, meaning the moment you add it to your cart it’s not deducted from the inventory. It’s deducted the second you pay for it on paypal. What you’re seeing in other cart systems are static pages, just a shell of what’s out there, it’s the cart system that’s interactive behind the scenes and has no interaction with the actual product page.

So this is how my cart system is different from everything out there and why it was so important to have. People got tired of seeing an available number on a vendors site only to learn they didn’t check out in time even though they could load a product into the cart. That cause oversells behind the scenes and it’s a huge mess (trust me). When we decided to go with Magento this solved that problem, no oversell, deducts from the inventory immediately, the product number shown is what is atually available, no one can take from your cart and you don’t have to check out at lightning speed.

I hope all of this makes sense so far or gives you a brief understanding how cart systems work. So moving on… now here is the problem for my store specifically; having a store in real time and having hundreds of customers logged on and hitting the refresh button is overloading the SQL database. There are hundreds of connections trying to refresh a real time store all at the same time and this is causing the site to crash or overload the database. I’m on the fanciest server all by myself. If my store was not in real time it would work just fine and the site would not crash.

So what does all this mean, what are the options, what am I going to do? Well I was given 3 options. One was to basically get a new cart system which would put us back to overselling and having to check out at lightening speed, whoever checks out first gets the coins and if you had one in your cart but weren’t fast enough, well tough luck situation. I don’t like that system, never have and never will. Option #2 have my website hosted on several servers much like Google, Microsoft, and the big boys do in order to spread the load of users out over several servers. While that isn’t a bad idea, it’s very expensive. I already pay enough money just to be hosted and having this site custom built for me. Being that this is only a hobby and I don’t sell stuff all the time, it’s not realistic to do this. Hey, if I had a money tree, I’d say go for it ;)

The last option and something that is not guaranteed to work or may not even be available is to load a static page for products but keep the cart real time. I don’t know how this all works and it’s something that the owner himself is looking into. He said he didn’t know if it could even be done but if it can, we’d try it. I should know something in the next couple of weeks about this scenario. If we can accomplish this it would be wonderful! The good thing about all of this is knowing what is wrong and now working on a solution.

My thoughts on this whole thing; I want to keep Magento, I really like the features and I liek that it’s real time and no one has to worry about having to check out super fast. Once the product is loaded in your cart, it’s  yours! Once the site overloads and crashes then you do lose your products unfortunately. I’m hoping we can find a way to make this work. In the event that a solution for Magento can not be worked out than I have to decide how I want to go about my sales. Do I switch carts and risk alot of angry people during crazy sales when they don’t get their coins? I always get emails from people after sales when this has happened in the past and I hate that it happens. I know I’mnot the only vendor who has this issue during a popular coin sale. I am strongly considering moving to a different technique in sales which would be not announcing a day/time. I’d list the product on the store and then send out newsletters announcing that they were for sale, then move onto the GC forums and announce sales there. This would alleviate a frenzied sale and different people would be able to buy coins. I know this idea wouldn’t be popular either with some people. The way I see it now is that there really isn’t any one perfect solution.

For now, I’m just going to wait and see what the owner can find out and what my next step is, then decisions can be made based on what I know. As always, you are more than welcome to comment about your thoughts/ideas on the situation. I know it’s easy to make suggestions but before you do, please keep in mind that you should have a good understandiong of how those cart systems and websites work. From the outside looking in, it’s never as simple as it seems to be finding solutions. if it were, the perfect system would be used by everyone.

In the meantime thanks for being patient and let’s keep our fingers crossed.

Cache Hopper Sale Results

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

I’m sitting here trying to think of something to type. Not much on answers at the moment.

The site was “stress tested” a good month ago and they thought everything was good to go. Sale time comes and things were looking good. About 2 minutes after the start time and about 1/4 of the Hoppers put into stock, the site crashed. The server admin got it up again and I got another Hopper in stock. This went on several times and at the last point, I had half the Hoppers listed and the other half I couldn’t get listed cause the site wouldn’t stay loaded. I couldn’t take any down either. What  a mess!

Essentially I just kept trying to get them loaded over the next half hour to hour because there was no way for me to remove the listed coins because people would squeeze an order in between crashes. I hadn’t anticipated this scenario playing out. I’ll sort through orders on Sunday when I have free time and start getting them packaged. I suppose it’s a good thing I only told the newsletter folks about the sale otherwise i don’t think the site would have held up at all like before.

The head honcho is calling me tomorrow morning so we can talk options. We had the host administrator watching the server as the sale took place. The problem comes in when everyone is refreshing at the same time. The database isn’t able to handle that. So I guess tomorrow I’ll get some questions answered about this whole thing. All I know is I get nervous on a sale when it goes smoothly and everytime I attempt to have a sale here, I feel very stressed and have a huge headache. I am not going through this again and I’m not putting any of you through this again. I don’t have answers to give you yet but I hopefully will have some direction tomorrow. Never would have guessed when I tried to enhance my site and do what’s best for everyone, it turned out to have some lasting problems for all of us.

Once I get some answers, I’ll make another post. All I can say is I’m sorry, I know some of you had some issues and I don’t have exact answers on this one. The only positive on my end is they were able to pinpoint the problem from the hosting end and now we need to find a solution to handle all the people on the site refreshing at the same time.

One of these days, my store is going to work :) I’ll be back with some answers in the next day or so.

ANASAZI GEOCOIN SPIRIT DWELLER AKA KOKOPELLI

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

I received the samples today and I have to say that this coin is now in my top 2 listing of coin designs I’ve done. It’s not even that it’s a spectacular design, I think it’s just so simple, cute and colorful. Every color combo and each metal turned out so nice. I can honestly say that there isn’t one of the editions that I don’t just adore.

I sat down to try and choose what ones I should bring to GCF and what to save for the store and I can’t make up my mind. I’ll definitely end up minting each version (8) and maybe even a few more color combos, I just really enjoy the design that much.

I’ll try to get some pictures later this weekend when things settle down just a bit. I think anyone who ends up purchasing any of these coins will absolutely fall in love.

I will be selling 1 set of the sample coins to help defray some of the vending costs and traveling to Salt Lake City. I won’t sell them all in one set like I did the Cache Hoppers but more than likely sell them in groups of 2. I’ll update this a bit later when I figure out exactly what I want to do.
