Here’s a collage of pictures of Sundance at 3 weeks old. He opened his eyes a couple days ago. Right now they are blue but are expected to get darker. What a little stinker!

The Sundance Kid at 3 weeks old.
Joe the cacher behind the “catsnfish” name emailed me one day asking if I would submit a story about geocoins to his online magazine. I told him I would and to give me a couple of weeks to put something together as I was busy and wouldn’t have a chance to get to it. However I think that was well over a month ago and I still haven’t wrote anything for him. I know, I know, I’m a terrible! The problem is, I have so little free time that sitting down to try write something for someone else seems daunting and one more thing to add to my “tsun: to do pile”.
I did ask Joe if he would like to be featured on my blog since it was geocaching related and I didn’t mind helping get the word out about his e-zine. So I wrote out some questions for him and said just answer and I’ll put a little article together on my blog. He made time and answered my questions, so I suppose I better write him an article for his e-zine too, huh?
So here is my article dedicated to THE ONLINE GEOCACHER e-zine with the help of Joe answering questions. I hope you’ll check his e-zine out and consider submitting your own articles and pictures to keep the e-zine interesting and hopefully inspiring you to continue your caching adventures!
The website address is http://onlinegeocacher.com/ it’s free to everyone and is a labor of love to the geocaching community. It was originally started by Ed Manley who is known in the geocaching community as The AlabamaRambler. He created the e-zine after someone in the forums had spoke of creating a print magazine about geocaching. Ed offered to start the e-zine as a not-for-profit venture as a gift to the geocaching community.
So I had asked Joe how he came to take over the magazine, to which he said that Ed had posted in the Groundspeak forums that he was looking for someone to take over because the submissions were slow in coming in and he didn’t want to make a “job” out of having to find people to write articles. (oh man do I feel bad now - guess I better write something this weekend). Joe said he saw the thread and discussed the issue with his wife because he felt the e-zine was a great way to relay his own stories and that he truly believed in the concept of the e-zine. He contacted Ed and made his “offer” which Ed accepted. So here Joe aka catsnfish is trying to offer the geocaching community a fun place to share stories, pictures and videos amongst our own kind
You have to admit, geocachers are definitely a breed of their own.
According to Joe, anyone can submit a story and I highly suggest you contribute or share with the geocaching world your experiences. You have to admit it’s fun to read about people who are out there doing the same thing as you and having similar experiences. I love looking at pictures and fun videos. I did offer Joe to check in on my blog and take a story and pictures from my place if he felt it might be something worth posting to his e-zine.
The Online Geocacher e-zine discusses everything from caching, geocoins, benchmarks, to tip and tricks. If it’s caching related, they’ll use it. You don’t need to be fancy with words or an expert photographer. The idea is to share stories and geocaching items of interest. Joe mentioned they have submissions from other countries like Greece and the Netherlands. Again, there is no cost associated with the magazine for those of you who enjoy reading geocaching.
I asked Joe about his 2 year goal for the e-zine and he mentioned he would like to see the e-zine on Iphones, Blackberries, Cacher’s PC’s, and articles written in their native languages. My personal opinion is that this is very accomplishable with a little bit of help from all of us!
Some of the geocachers who are a part of the e-zine are; catsnfish, TheAlabamaRambler, Rockin Roddy, GATOULIS, and KC5NVJ and then the contributing public. So I say thumbs up to those who are giving their time to give us a free geocachers e-zine!
A little bit bout Joe himself; he found the geocaching obsession in 2007, I know he’s at least a part-time coiner cause he’s been a customer of mine so that makes him a great guy in my book, lol. He’s located in Omaha, Nebraska (are you a Husker fan Joe? I’ll just assume he is) and he enjoys giving back to the caching community through this e-zine.
Ok, that wraps up my discussion with Joe aka catsnfish. Now having written this piece and knowing how much time I put into blogging, keeping in touch on FB, doing this geocoin desiging/minting amongst other geocoin/caching related stuff in conjunction with my real life (haha), I know this kind of thing is very time consuming and is usually a labor of love which many times is underappreciated because of the lack of understanding of just how much time and money a person puts in behind the scenes. So my thoughts to you are; let’s make an effort to help Joe and his crew out by submitting some articles, pictures and even videos if you take them. Check in and read his e-zine when you have time and I promise to do my part! I like to see the “little” guy succeed and I know just how tough it can be to keep chugging along.
Thank you Joe for your time and effort and that goes for the others associated with the venture along with the contributions sent in by the public. Thanks for your time in answering some questions and for giving back to our global community!

As promised here is a sum up of what’s going on with the webstore. As most of you know, the store seems to crash everytime there is a sale. This last time was no exception and it wasn’t even a full blown sale. However I did speak with the owner of the compnay who built and hosts my website and we discussed the issues at hand, so here is what he had to say about the whole thing.
First, even though some of you haven’t got to experience it yet, the cart system is in “real time” and once a product is loaded, no one can take it from your cart, so you technically don’t have to rush to check out. I know this is a new concept for people and most everyone tries to get in and get out as fast as possible for fear of losing what’s in their cart. The only time you lose your cart contents is when the site crashes as some of you found out.
This is the only cart system out there that has this feature. Magento is the “sweetest” cart system out there and in theory when everything goes as planned, it’s a wonderful system. However here is where the problem comes in and no one knew that this would happen until it did. The cart system I use is in real time, it does not use “static pages” for the webstore. A static page is what you see on other cart systems and websites. I have static page in use on my site such as the home page, FAQ, Gallery, etc. These pages can not be altered, nothing about them is interactive. My webstore is in real time and the pages are not static. One of the ways you can tell this is by going to the store and ordering the test product. You are able to see the amount of product available in the store but when you add a product to your cart, the number changes immediately which indicates everything is happening in “real time.”
If I were using zencart for instance, what you as the customer see is a static page and maybe the number of products available. Every time you add a product to your cart and go to check out, that product amount shown doesn’t change until you actually check out of paypal at which time maybe 25 other people have checked out also. So the amount of product shown is never accurate because it’s not in “real time”, meaning the moment you add it to your cart it’s not deducted from the inventory. It’s deducted the second you pay for it on paypal. What you’re seeing in other cart systems are static pages, just a shell of what’s out there, it’s the cart system that’s interactive behind the scenes and has no interaction with the actual product page.
So this is how my cart system is different from everything out there and why it was so important to have. People got tired of seeing an available number on a vendors site only to learn they didn’t check out in time even though they could load a product into the cart. That cause oversells behind the scenes and it’s a huge mess (trust me). When we decided to go with Magento this solved that problem, no oversell, deducts from the inventory immediately, the product number shown is what is atually available, no one can take from your cart and you don’t have to check out at lightning speed.
I hope all of this makes sense so far or gives you a brief understanding how cart systems work. So moving on… now here is the problem for my store specifically; having a store in real time and having hundreds of customers logged on and hitting the refresh button is overloading the SQL database. There are hundreds of connections trying to refresh a real time store all at the same time and this is causing the site to crash or overload the database. I’m on the fanciest server all by myself. If my store was not in real time it would work just fine and the site would not crash.
So what does all this mean, what are the options, what am I going to do? Well I was given 3 options. One was to basically get a new cart system which would put us back to overselling and having to check out at lightening speed, whoever checks out first gets the coins and if you had one in your cart but weren’t fast enough, well tough luck situation. I don’t like that system, never have and never will. Option #2 have my website hosted on several servers much like Google, Microsoft, and the big boys do in order to spread the load of users out over several servers. While that isn’t a bad idea, it’s very expensive. I already pay enough money just to be hosted and having this site custom built for me. Being that this is only a hobby and I don’t sell stuff all the time, it’s not realistic to do this. Hey, if I had a money tree, I’d say go for it
The last option and something that is not guaranteed to work or may not even be available is to load a static page for products but keep the cart real time. I don’t know how this all works and it’s something that the owner himself is looking into. He said he didn’t know if it could even be done but if it can, we’d try it. I should know something in the next couple of weeks about this scenario. If we can accomplish this it would be wonderful! The good thing about all of this is knowing what is wrong and now working on a solution.
My thoughts on this whole thing; I want to keep Magento, I really like the features and I liek that it’s real time and no one has to worry about having to check out super fast. Once the product is loaded in your cart, it’s yours! Once the site overloads and crashes then you do lose your products unfortunately. I’m hoping we can find a way to make this work. In the event that a solution for Magento can not be worked out than I have to decide how I want to go about my sales. Do I switch carts and risk alot of angry people during crazy sales when they don’t get their coins? I always get emails from people after sales when this has happened in the past and I hate that it happens. I know I’mnot the only vendor who has this issue during a popular coin sale. I am strongly considering moving to a different technique in sales which would be not announcing a day/time. I’d list the product on the store and then send out newsletters announcing that they were for sale, then move onto the GC forums and announce sales there. This would alleviate a frenzied sale and different people would be able to buy coins. I know this idea wouldn’t be popular either with some people. The way I see it now is that there really isn’t any one perfect solution.
For now, I’m just going to wait and see what the owner can find out and what my next step is, then decisions can be made based on what I know. As always, you are more than welcome to comment about your thoughts/ideas on the situation. I know it’s easy to make suggestions but before you do, please keep in mind that you should have a good understandiong of how those cart systems and websites work. From the outside looking in, it’s never as simple as it seems to be finding solutions. if it were, the perfect system would be used by everyone.
In the meantime thanks for being patient and let’s keep our fingers crossed.

I told my sister-in-law that I was expecting again to which she replied; “you’re getting another puppy.” I said “yes” and told her congratulations on becoming an Auntie again
My family has learned to play along with me when I say I’m expecting (hahaha). It’s become more of a silent moment on to the; “oh, you’re getting another dog?” Geesh, it’s not like I have a problem buying dogs or something
So yes, tsun is adding to her ranchette by welcoming a new Mini Aussie to the family. He was born 7/7/2009, so he’s about 2 weeks old right now and weighs just over 1 lb. He has blue merle coloring (like Cowboy did) and I should be able to pick him up sometime in early September!
I was picking out names that I thought I might like for him. Tristin was named for Brad Pitt’s character in the movie “Legends of the Fall”, Dakota was named after a western town and I loved the sound of Dakota. Cowboy was named for the little cowboy kid on the ranch he came from. I have decided to name my little guy after another movie character from “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” His name will be Sundance and he will be very loved!
Here is his first picture and as I receive more pictures as he grows, I’ll post them here. So to my little Sundance, I’m waiting patiently to bring you home :) tsun

Ok, I needed something fun to talk about today so I’m posting the full sample set for everyone to see. I just love this little flute player!

I’m sitting here trying to think of something to type. Not much on answers at the moment.
The site was “stress tested” a good month ago and they thought everything was good to go. Sale time comes and things were looking good. About 2 minutes after the start time and about 1/4 of the Hoppers put into stock, the site crashed. The server admin got it up again and I got another Hopper in stock. This went on several times and at the last point, I had half the Hoppers listed and the other half I couldn’t get listed cause the site wouldn’t stay loaded. I couldn’t take any down either. What a mess!
Essentially I just kept trying to get them loaded over the next half hour to hour because there was no way for me to remove the listed coins because people would squeeze an order in between crashes. I hadn’t anticipated this scenario playing out. I’ll sort through orders on Sunday when I have free time and start getting them packaged. I suppose it’s a good thing I only told the newsletter folks about the sale otherwise i don’t think the site would have held up at all like before.
The head honcho is calling me tomorrow morning so we can talk options. We had the host administrator watching the server as the sale took place. The problem comes in when everyone is refreshing at the same time. The database isn’t able to handle that. So I guess tomorrow I’ll get some questions answered about this whole thing. All I know is I get nervous on a sale when it goes smoothly and everytime I attempt to have a sale here, I feel very stressed and have a huge headache. I am not going through this again and I’m not putting any of you through this again. I don’t have answers to give you yet but I hopefully will have some direction tomorrow. Never would have guessed when I tried to enhance my site and do what’s best for everyone, it turned out to have some lasting problems for all of us.
Once I get some answers, I’ll make another post. All I can say is I’m sorry, I know some of you had some issues and I don’t have exact answers on this one. The only positive on my end is they were able to pinpoint the problem from the hosting end and now we need to find a solution to handle all the people on the site refreshing at the same time.
One of these days, my store is going to work
I’ll be back with some answers in the next day or so.

I received the samples today and I have to say that this coin is now in my top 2 listing of coin designs I’ve done. It’s not even that it’s a spectacular design, I think it’s just so simple, cute and colorful. Every color combo and each metal turned out so nice. I can honestly say that there isn’t one of the editions that I don’t just adore.
I sat down to try and choose what ones I should bring to GCF and what to save for the store and I can’t make up my mind. I’ll definitely end up minting each version (8) and maybe even a few more color combos, I just really enjoy the design that much.
I’ll try to get some pictures later this weekend when things settle down just a bit. I think anyone who ends up purchasing any of these coins will absolutely fall in love.
I will be selling 1 set of the sample coins to help defray some of the vending costs and traveling to Salt Lake City. I won’t sell them all in one set like I did the Cache Hoppers but more than likely sell them in groups of 2. I’ll update this a bit later when I figure out exactly what I want to do.

Ok, the coins are loaded on the store and now we wait! The coins will say “Sold Out” until the sale starts at which time I will manually have to go into the admin panel and change everything to available. When the “Sold Out” disappears it means the coins have gone up for sale. It will probably take me a couple minutes to get through each coin since I am unable to make them available all at the same time.
If a version of the coin “sells out” than the “Sold Out” will appear again. I have no idea how this sale will go and I have limited each version to 3 of each. In the event of a sell out, I’ll put in an order for a remint on some different and maybe a couple of the same colors/metals. I probably won’t send out a new newsletter but I will keep this blog updated and I will post to the Groundspeak Forums once the coins are listed for sale. This should make it less competitive.
Please remember the 2nd minting will have the new texture underneath the translucent. This 1st minting will be the only one without the textured background.
Ok, keeping my fingers crossed that this sale will be successful on the store!

The Cache Hopper Geocoins will be available for purchase on July 16th, 2009 at 4:00 pm Montana time. Please remember there is a time clock on the Store.
Time conversions: Eastern time: 6:00 pm, Central 5:00 pm, Mountain 4:00 pm, Pacific 3:00 pm. If you are from outside of North America, please email me which country you live in and I will let you know what time/date the sale will be in your country.
As mentioned before, this is not being posted on the Groundspeak forums, I’m trying to keep it limited in notification to the blog/newsletter so we can attempt a successful sale on the new webstore.
In the event of a sell-out, please remember the design will be reminted but in some different color combinations for the next round. I will also bring some of these with me to GCF.
The price will be $7. 75 per coin. They are trackable with a unique icon. 2-1/4″ toe to toe and 1-1/4″ wide, 2mm thick. They have a small hole so you can use these for a number of purposes. I have made one a necklace pendant that I have been wearing. These have been priced to make them affordable and to stimulate coin releases into the wild!
Once the intial sale is over, I will open a thread on GC for those who need to discuss the coin or get information easily accessible to and from others. I’ll work on getting a newsletter out tonight.
Thanks, tsun
